The Information Age has arrived and is here to stay. We are inundated with a seemingly unceasing stream of facts, figures, and foibles. How are we to make sense of it? How can we sift through the riff raff and get to the important "stuff"? Who can we trust?

Journalism is at an interesting cross-roads these days, from mega-corporate overlords crafting media empires and Twitter users contributing towards (mostly) peaceful revolution. Where does the field stand? Where do you stand?

This course presents a unique look at how we interpret and analyze the events in the world at large. I do not profess to create journalists of each of you; I do hope you will develop a greater awareness for your world, as told by a variety of sources. As such, I hope to craft you into better consumers of news media.

Additionally, the course will focus on more practical matters: how is the news produced? To this end, we will be writing and revising articles; we will also focus on layout and publication. The most practical goal of this class is to help produce North's student newspaper, The Ram's Horn. It is my hope and intention that everything we learn and create will have a spot in the newspaper, to be published and read by the students of Clarkstown North.
These are some of the large concepts we will explore throughout the semester:
  • What is journalism? What is the "news"? What is newsworthy?
  • Where / when does journalism happen?
  • Is journalism an important and required element of modern society?
  • How can we discern truth in our world?
  • How does journalism happen? (This addresses the techniques and style of Journalism.)
  • What are the best practices for publishing the news?
